#65 How to become a public speaker in the Toastmasters International organization - Interview with Lauri Lehmusvirta (part I)

Does the thought of public speaking excite you or fill you with dread? Imagine standing before an audience, ready to deliver a presentation or speech.

Are you familiar with Toastmasters International?

Toastmasters International is a global organization dedicated to public speaking and leadership development. It boasts thousands of clubs worldwide, offering a platform for individuals to hone their speaking, moderating, evaluating, and improvisational skills through regular practice.

As a member of the 'Stadi Talkers,' an English-speaking Toastmasters club in Helsinki, I had the opportunity to speak with my clubmate Lauri Lehmusvirta. With more than seven years under his belt in public speaking, Lauri, who is also affiliated with JCI, specializes in coaching others on how to engage in debates and deliver compelling presentations.

In the first segment of our chat, you'll discover:

  • The way experimenting with different roles can transform your character

  • Common psychological hurdles faced when stepping onto the stage for the first time

  • Tips for infusing humor into your speeches

The follow-up segment (episode #66) delves deeper into overcoming stage-related self-doubt and strategies for improving your public speaking abilities.

The 'Spotlight your TRUE self' podcast stands on three main supports:

  • Self-confidence & self-esteem

  • Emotion management

  • Practical communication strategies, grounded in NLP principles

Each installment explores one of these themes.
